Avoid Illegal Taxis in Dubai: How to Identify Official RTA Taxis

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has issued a stern warning to commuters, urging them to avoid unlicensed taxis that may charge exorbitant or fluctuating fares. With the rise of illegal transport services, especially in busy areas like airports and Jebel Ali, the RTA is taking proactive steps to ensure passenger safety and enforce regulations. Last updated on April 7, this guide highlights how to identify authorized taxis, offers tips for safe hailing, and provides an overview of Dubai’s taxi fares and booking methods.
Key Features of Official RTA Taxis
To protect yourself from unauthorized operators, the RTA advises passengers to check the following features before boarding a taxi:
- Coloured Roof: All Dubai public taxis feature a distinctive roof in one of these colours: red, blue, green, yellow, orange, or pink.
- RTA Logo: The vehicle must display the official RTA logo.
- Uniformed Driver: The taxi driver must wear an official RTA uniform.
Additionally, authorized taxis are equipped with controlled meters visible to passengers and surveillance cameras to monitor driver conduct. Illegal taxis lack these features, making them easy to spot with a keen eye.
RTA’s Crackdown on Illegal Taxis
In 2024, the RTA intensified its efforts to curb illegal passenger transport, impounding at least 225 vehicles. Fines for violators are steep—up to Dh50,000 for corporate offenders and Dh30,000 for individuals. Airports, particularly Terminals 1, 2, and 3 at Dubai International Airport, have been hotspots, with 90 vehicles impounded during inspections. Another 49 vehicles were seized in Jebel Ali, where unlicensed operators often target low-income workers with cheaper fares.
The RTA warns that illegal taxis pose safety risks and urges the public to steer clear. Regular inspections across Dubai help maintain a secure transport environment for residents and tourists alike.
How to Hail a Taxi in Dubai
Dubai’s taxis operate 24/7, offering multiple hailing options. You can book a ride via the official Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC) S’hail or Careem apps, or hail a taxi from the street (taxis stop only in designated safe areas).
